..... In my long artistic career, which began in the late 1950s, I devoted a lot of energy to addressing social and environmental problems. Surely the difficult relationship between industrial design and applied arts was what fascinated and committed me more than anything else, for the long term and for the difficulties of operating in a difficult social and professional context. A significant part of this history and this activity can be found in the reading of the magazines that I directed from the seventies to the 2000s: IN Argomenti and Images of Design, Designing Inpiù, Booklet, Kaleidoscope, Area, Living with Art, Crafts between Art and Design . Towards the end of the 1960s, some architects (later historicized as "radicals") activated a series of experiences and researches (for example mine on the urban periphery with the "recovery and reinvention" of waste materials from the consumer society or even experiences by Riccardo Dalisi in the Traiano district of Naples) to bring "manual skills" and territorial design back to the attention of official culture as an alternative to internationalist architecture, the one that, in a nutshell, always created the same housing model, indifferent to the territory: from Zurich to Cairo the same architecture!

In questa breve descrizione di Ugo La Pietra si può cogliere il senso di questo lavoro editoriale. Una riflessione che appare più che mai necessaria, in linea con le nuove tendenze di sviluppo dell’attuale ricerca progettuale nel design, nell’architettura e  nelle arti applicate.

Evidente l’appartenenza di questi scritti a quel momento storico, limpida la grande spinta innovativa presente.

..... Nella mia lunga attività artistica, che inizia alla fine degli anni Cinquanta, ho dedicato molte energie nell’affrontare problemi sociali e ambientali.

Sicuramente il difficile rapporto tra disegno industriale e arti applicate è stato quello che mi ha appassionato e impegnato più di qualsiasi altra cosa, per il lungo periodo e per le difficoltà di operare in un contesto sociale e professionale difficile.

Una parte significativa di questa storia e di questa attività è riscontrabile nella lettura delle riviste che ho diretto dagli anni Settanta al Duemila: IN Argomenti e Immagini di Design, Progettare Inpiù, Fascicolo, Caleidoscopio, Area, Abitare con Arte, Artigianato tra Arte e Design. Verso la fine degli anni Sessanta alcuni architetti poi storicizzati come radicali attivarono una serie di esperienze e ricerche (ad esempio le mie sulla periferia urbana con il “recupero e reinvenzione” dei materiali di scarto della società dei consumi o anche le esperienze di Riccardo Dalisi nel quartiere Traiano di Napoli) per riproporre all’attenzione della cultura ufficiale la manualità e il design territoriale come alternativa all’architettura internazionalista, quella che, in poche parole, realizzava sempre il medesimo modello abitativo, indifferente al territorio: da Zurigo a Il Cairo la stessa architettura!
